12" Alnico Tone Tubby Field Reports 2007

Hi John, I can't thank you enough for letting me use the Tone Tubby cabinet for the BR Cohn show last Saturday. Those speakers sound so big and beautiful. Adding the Tone Tubby cab alongside the Deluxe Reverb made all the difference in the world. I would have been a sad puppy if I did the show without it. I sent along a photo of me playing last weekend. Very photogenic I might add. (the Tone Tubby that is) Thanks again,

Jerry Cortez/Northern California

Hi guys, I can’t tell you how much your speaker has improved my playing. I can now hear everything, every nuisance of my guitars. I play thru a MK-IV, I have had 25 various amps. I have 2 keepers. My old 65 fender twin reverb with HUGE Jbl’s in it. That won’t change. But the boogie with your speaker (now that it is completely broken in) has the nicest sounds I have ever heard. I’m a tone freak! The tubby has been the best investment for the buck I have. My boogie is a most versatile instrument, and with your speaker in it, I can get every sound I can hear in my head. AMAZING! I’m very busy with my business’s however, most guys take an hour to go run or swim, I make sure I get my hour of tone! It keeps me sane, and I will be ordering more speakers for my 4 10’s and a 12” cabinet. Of course I have the ol black case and am awaiting a custom cab from mesa, when it gets close you will get my order. Again thanks for a superior product. I am drawn to quality, and good ol American products.

Hi Tone Tubbies!!
I recently purchased a 16 ohm Tone Tubby replacement speaker for my AC 15. It had come with a Wharfedale and was shrill and brittle. I installed the speaker, turned it on and proceeded to kneel at the alter of True Tone! I had never heard your speakers (that I was aware of) but had read numerous reviews, so I thought I would try one. I was not prepared for how profound the difference would be. Even though the AC15 is not a hand wired amp, it actually sounds better than my Badcat Black Cat single 12. It is easily the best sounding amp I have ever owned. Thank you very much for your commitment to building the very best speaker possible. I have been seeking this type of sound all my life. Lo and behold, Tone Tubby transported me from Bland Land to Tonal Nirvana. Blessings to you and your staff,

Brian Diller/Nashville, TN

Just bought a pair of Tone Tubby Alnico 12s which went into a Rivera closed- back cabinet that formerly housed two Celestion Vintage 30s. I'm powering them with a really nice Marshall 50-watt Model 1987 Reissue that's had Svetlana tubes and Mercury Magnetics transformers installed. My detailed, highly involved technical review of the speakers is as follows:

ARE YOU SCREAMIN' KIDDING ME??? THESE THINGS ARE BEYOND AWESOME!!! THEY BLEW THE CELESTIONS SO FAR OUT OF THE WATER THAT I CAN'T EVEN SEE WHERE THEY LANDED!!! The warmth, the sing, the depth, the sweetness of the tone, the power - unbelievable. They suit all styles, from hard rock to fusion to blues to country. You have another convert. I'll be ordering more of your speakers for a couple more of my amps, and I'm harassing the heck out of my colleagues to buy your speakers, too.

Thank you - I haven't heard sounds this sweet since my ancient Ampeg Gemini bit the dust 25 years ago!

Jeff Maxwell/Canton, MI

"Well, I have been recording for three weeks with the Tone Tubby speakers in guitar amp situations, and I can report that they are PHENOMENAL. I really love the sound of these, and I have ordered several already. Putting an alnico 12" in an old tweed tremolux (my main "cropper sound" amp for years, two alnico 10's in a Super (4 won't fit because of the transformer and tubs...slightly too big...but I will put 4 if I can fit them), a 12" alnico in my Deluxe, and probably a couple of other amps. In a way, I hate to let anyone else know of this, and keep it as much to myself as possible, but I guess that's not fair"

Hello, I want just to say thank you very much for developing this fantastic Tone Tubby Speaker...! Before I was playing a Celestion Vintage30 Speaker und then I became the Info´s about the Tone Tubby from a friend.... Quickly I ordered one piece for my Fender Hot Rod Deluxe via South Valley Vintage Amps and it was blowing me away...
I use an Orange Rockerverb 100 and the 4x12" Box in combination with my HRD but the Sound of my HRD now with the Tone Tubby H1E is really unbelievable... much more bottom, air and clarity ...!

Last weekend I played in front of 2000 people in Bern and the sound of my HRD was my absolutly favourite and he was louder then the Orange...!!!!!

Thanks very much - You made me very happy and I will order know some more Tone Tubby´s to setup my Equipment with it.... Greetings from Austria,
Cordial,
Armand Oberle

Hi it's me again I had my alnico in yesterday and played with it ... Holly God, the sound of my deluxe reverb mixed with this cab sound like heaven, i'm not even sure i'm not dreaming ! It is now just or even better than the way i wanted it, Thank's to all of you at A Brown Sound !
ps: I appreciate the litle marking inside of my cab that says "Made for Robin Tremblay 04/07", it is just a litle detail but it is a nice idea to do that , thank you so very much ! ;)

Robin Trembley/Deux-Montagnes Qc

Oh my goodness! I received the package about 6 our time. I had some friends come over at 7 for some study. I was so tired I couldn't finish dinner, but when I opened the package and saw the tubby I became energized.I have a mesa MK-IV with a hardwood case and cane front. I have had so much work done to this amp the sound is amazing. I dissembled the chassis, back and pulled the celestron out. Dropped the Tubby in and reversed the process. I put the amp back on the stand about 9:30 and dialed in my sounds. I am completely blow away! I can't describe it more than that. The response, the feedback and the tone are amazing. I always play this on tweed power and I can achieve any nuance of sound and attack. For the first
time in my life I can actually hear everything.
Thanks so much for the speaker. I'm sure I will get years of pleasure out of the tubby. I have an old mesa cab that has 4 10's and a 12... I'm thinking of tubby's for that cab...

Thanks again, A tubby fan,

Chuck/South Ogden, UT

Hey guys!

I just put one of your Alnico Hempcone 12's in my Blues Deluxe. It is rare that a product lives up to it's hype. Yours exceeds it! I'm stunned at the tone coming from my amp!

Thanks for your time and a fantastic speaker!!!!!

Michael Stock

I chose to purchase an OldField Tube Amp that Paul Gussler made for me. It is a Marquis 50 and I had him put 2 Tone Tubby Alnico speakers in it. I can only describe it as warm, sweet and like silk. You can check Paul's website out at www.oldfieldtubeamps.com. Paul is really impressed with the sound this amp produces with these Tone Tubby's. Thanks so much for helping me make the RIGHT choice for my speaker selection and for finally getting my own personal sound.

Cordially,

Karl Goble

The speaker arrived on friday and I mounted into my 1960 Gibson GA Les Paul amp. I had previously been using a Fender alnico speaker, which had a fairly harsh, beamy top end - I needed to mix the two channels in order to get enough bottom to mellow out the top.

With the TT, I immediately noticed that I no longer needed to do that. In fact the bright channel, which had previously sounded thin and shrill, now has beautiful rich bottom and mids, and a smooth creamy high end (just like everyone else is saying!). It made my guitar (a very resonant custom made strat with one peice b.e. maple neck and swamp ash body) sound woody, chunky, with a clear and smooth top end. I couldn't stop playing!

I haven't smoked grass for years, but I felt the same creative focus on tone - with riffs, and grooves just coming out in response to the inspiring richness of the various tones from the guitar, amp & speaker.

Well done, guys! You have another convert!

Kind regards,

Tony Reid/Australia

Thank you very much!!!! I got my Tone Tubby today. It ‘s a perfect marriage with my Deluxe Reverb and Stratocaster. What everyone says about the “tone” is absolutely true. It’s opened up a whole new world for me. Thanks again,

Patrick Romine/Hempstead, TX

I got the Alnico today, installed it and expected to spend the next 50 hours breaking it in. However, at this point I don't care if the sound improves further. I just spent 2 hours getting some of the sweetest tone I've heard in a decade, including having the hair on the back of my neck stand up. Very satisfying...

Keep making those speakers!

12" Alnico Tone Tubby Field Reports 2005/2006
I am finding the sound sweet right out of the box. I don't understand what these guys are saying about a break in period. The tones have a "sweet" and round bell like chime to them right out of the box without the concentrated mids that my carboard-ike EV's had. The sound is surprisingly Santana like. I sound like I was playing through a cardboard box before and all of a sudden got some good speakers. Oh, that's what my 56 Les Paul special sounds like! Nice.

I can't really hear too much difference between the Alnico and Ceramic, except the Alnico is a bit sweeter sounding.

I think I am going to have to buy more of them pretty soon. Will be in touch. Thanks.

Jim Sogi/Hawaii

Thank you Tone Tubby for helping me to realize the tone that I have always envisioned…I received my first Tone Tubby 12'' Alnico Hempcone Speaker last night and was amazed by the variety of colors, texture, and sensitivity to dynamics that it produced.  For several years I have played a Fender Strat (now an Anderson Classic) through a Fender Deluxe Reverb 65' Reissue.  While the sound produced from this combo was approximately what I had sought, the highs were always too shrill, bottom end too heavy and reverb too saturated, even at lower settings.  I've attempted to resolve these problems with little success via EQ stomp boxes and endless combinations of tone settings on my guitar and amp.  Upon installing the Tone Tubby speaker last night, my tone immediately tightened up and the tonal problems I had previously experienced were suddenly gone!  Absolutely incredible!  My Anderson Classic has never sounded better and I finally have THE tone...
Thank you again!

Adam Scherer/Jersey City, NJ

I recently purchased some Tone Tubby Alnico 12's for the two amps that I run in my rig. Two 16 ohm units for my Mesa Lonestar and an 8 ohm for a Carvin Vintage 16. To this point I'd been doing a lot of creative re-tubing etc. to try to get "that sound" and installing these new speakers did the trick. Both of my amps now sing like the birds in the trees. Keep up the good work.
Thank you, Sincerly,

Nicholas G./Yreka, CA

I am amazed at how great my 50 watt Marshall 800 model 4010 (1-12 combo w/EL-34)sounds with the 16 ohm, Alnico Tubby! Now, I have to figure out how to get rid of the original G12/70 that sounded like an ice pick in the ear...
This is the second Tone Tubby I have purchased from you for small 1-12 combos. I receive so many compliments on my tone over the past two years. I put my first Tone Tubby in a Mesa Boogie F-30 in 2003, A fantastic improvement over the stock speaker.
Thank you,

Todd Simms/Running Springs, CA

Hello, The Tone Tubbies alnico H1Es I ordered from South Valley Vintage Amps arrived today. I installed them immediately and could not believe my ears ... what was once harsh and piercing was suddenly smooth as silk. I was going to sell this amp (Top Hat 35-watt Ambassador), but these
speakers have changed everything. Now I have the best amp I have ever owned. The C12N and Vintage 30 are OUTTA HERE.

Thanks for making such a great product. I feel inspired again.

Erik Loyd/ Bakersfield, CA

To everyone at A Brown Soun;

Thanks for all of your hard work and every one at A Brown Soun on the extraordinary job you had
done on my Rivera M60 112. I knew that Rivera had a good reputation but the sound quality of the amp prior to bringing it to A Brown Soun was good but in general uninspired and for the most part harsh. Obviously having the amp biased correctly and replacing three suspect 12AX7 tubes helped but that wouldn't have addressed the pronounced mid range honk from the stock speaker. The new Tone Tubby 12" HIE 8 adds a lot more complexity and warmth to the amp (the clean channel is now set to emulate a tone that Bob Wills would be dang proud of) and with the gain channel it will go from "Beano" to ballistic with a couple tugs of the eq boosts.

Man, I've been playing heavy rock for twenty five years and this is now the thickest, heaviest, meanest, gain tone I think I've heard. I can't believe it's all coming out of an open back 1 12 cab.

I knew that dropping in a top dollar speaker in my amp was a gamble but I whole heatedly think that the gamble had payed off. Sure, the repair bill was quite a bit of money but when compared to the cost of a new domestically made amp the total was a third less than what I was looking at as a replacement amp.

Again, thank you so much for your hard work, your
professionalism, and your courtesy.

Adam/Berkeley , CA

A Friend of mine put one of your speakers into a 1969 Ampeg Reverbojet and it sounded incredible. It made the amp come alive like it was " Get Yer Ya Ya's", all over again.

Steve/Chattanooga, TN

I'VE BEEN TELLING THE AUSTRALIANS ABOUT THE TUBZZZ. I'M DIGGING THE SPEAKER--ESPECIALLY THE WEIGHT....JUST EXPERIMENTING WITH HAVING IT ON A STAND AND GETTING THE IDEAL DISTANCE FROM MY EARS AT THE MOMENT. WILL KEEP YA POSTED---THANX=--

Hi Charlie!!! I got the tubby today. I have installed 2 of these now in my Marshall MS-15G Micro Stack bottoms and I am powering it with a highly underrrated Sovtek Mig 50 head. For the disbelievers I hooked up 2 other micro bottoms ( I own 2 of these stacks) and A/B'd them. Slackjaws across the room. The apparent increase in volume alone blew them off their chairs with unexpected transient ultra responsive explosiveness!!! Then they started to drink in the beautiful shimmering tone!!! Truly amazing!!! I sent out the original Marshall head to buddy Nathan Burks (Bumbox Custom Audio) who converted the 15 watt solid state head to an 18 watt all tube plexi style monster. What a great amp builder and truely nice guy!! This amp also SINGS through the tubbies. When I was a kid, like many in the 70's my life's dream was to own a 100 watt 8/12 Marshall stack. Now that I can finally afford one it simply is overkill for my lifestyle, let alone my back!! So to fulfill my dream I bought these little stacks. For the money they are real nice, but more eye candy than ear candy by a long shot. Well!!! Not any more!!!! Great! Great! Great!! I cannot say enough about your hemp cone speakers, though the word "alchemy" comes to mind as I wonder if you guys "sold your souls" in order to successfully reinvent the musical instrument loudspeaker and take it up notches heretofore unknown to man!!! There are a lot of good speakers out there and some truly great ones as well;..however, by a huge margin,..Tone Tubby speakers IMHO, and i am sure agrowing legion of others, are the best on the planet!! Thanks you so much for a truely great product!

Dr. Chuck Billera/NY

Those two 12" tubbies arrived yesterday, and I Finally got them bolted into some cabs today to test against Cel Alnico Blues, Jensen P12N reissues and original P12Q, Greenbacks and G12H-30, etc. Man... those tubbies sound fantastic. Have been playing them with a range of amps all day, and I just can't stop. Each time I think I'm done, I come up with another idea..."Let's see how the alnico Tubby sounds in my tweed Tremolux." And of course it sounds amazing. Problem is, each amp I try them in I say: "Okay, THIS is the amp I'm taking to the next gig...!" Until I try them in the next amp.
Fantastic speakers. All the best,

Dave Hunter/New Hampshire

Love ths speaker! Amazing, wonderful. I put it in my 59 Deluxe and it made the amp a monster. I really didn't know what to expect but it's great with my Strat and Les Paul. You have a great product, it kicked my ass!!

JJ French/Twisted Sister

I´ve got my Fender Vibroverb from 64 and it´s a great amplifier,
but it sounds best when I play it through one of my 12" tone tubbies.
I´ve tried a lot of other brands for the 15" speaker,
but nothing sounds as good as the 12" tone tubbie hempcone sounds!

Jan/Magic Music

Hey Guys,

I just wanted to drop you a line to tell you how much I love my tubby 2x12 bomb cab (1 Alnico and 1 Ceramic). I have never heard fidelity out of a guitar cab like this. Mark Akin sold me on this thing months ago and I must say it was well worth the wait. I’m running a Bad Cat Hot Cat 30R into it and it’s truly unreal. At a gig the other night, someone came up to me and said: “If you’re looking for the perfect tone, you can stop now.” All I can say is thanks. It’s the rig I’ve dreamed of forever. Your cab makes an electric guitar respond like an acoustic instrument, and that’s what I’ve always strived for. And you guys can thank Mark Akin for a loyal convert. I’ll always use these speakers. And I’ll tell everyone I know about them.

Thanks again,

Jeff Phillips/National Sales Manager L.Benito Guitars USA

Tone Tubby has a wonderful tone. I have mounted to my CARR AMP. It is the highest. It was more wonderful than vintage jensen alnico carried in vintage fender!!.

Best regards,

Yoshiyuki/Tokyo, Japan

I am going to write a letter now, if I don't it will be a while before I decide I have enuff listening time on the cab I got from you to write again. It was a 2-12 wired for 16 ohm so it would match up to my JTM 45. This cabinet sings to me! I tried it with the Marshall....freakin sweet cream sound with the LesPaul and perfect Strat tones from the '56. Plugged the cab into the back of my Carr Slant 6V....again it had a sound that makes me wish I had only bought the head, not a 2-12 (I must say though, the stock Carr sounds fine...the TT's just add another way to scream). Even running off the BFSR makes guitars sing with new voice.
I am VERY satisfied...thanks and expect to see repeat biz from me.

Rich Fuglewicz/California

HI There !!! Your cabinet arrived safely, and I have had it on three gigs already. It sounds pretty amazing, and seems to bring out the midrange of guitar sounds much better than the other speakers I had. Crunch tones really sound better, they seem to have a more natural break up, that adds to the harmonics in some way.
In any event, thank you for getting me the cabinet so quickly, so I can put it to work !!

Update November 30th 2004:
Thank you, I have now used the speakers full time, six nites a week, for two weeks now, and there is no going back to the older speaker sound. You guys spoiled me !!
I will send you some sound samples when I get into the studio around Dec, Jan....
Thanks again, I appreciate your attention to quality !!!!

Update January 12th 2005:
I really love my new cabinet with the the two 12 inch hempcones, they are awesome.
Now they have almost 80 gigs on them, and they continue to amaze everyone that hears the tone these speakers put out. The sound is warm, and engages every audience I play for these days. I also am somewhat amused that even other guitar players, with some other pretty high end gear, are asking questions about the cabinet, and I think will be customers of you soon as well.

Agnes Rock/Northern California

I am constantly enjoying my TT's in my Victoria low-power Twin. I took the Twin down to Mark at Victoria for service a couple months ago. I had to chuckle when Mark played a bit with his re-issue Nocaster, stopped...played a bit more. He stopped for a moment again, turned-around and said, "These Tone Tubbies really SPEAK!" and kept-on playing. I thought that was a great compliment for your speakers from someone who is pretty-familiar with great tone! .

Gregg March/Lake Villa, IL

Hello, The speaker came today, and guys I have to let you know that you rule!!! I put this in my Music Man 112 RD 100 and compared it to a Weber Chicago and a JBL 120 and guess what, YOU RULE, and those other speakers are great, but you have more of everything when it comes to tone. I am 52 years old and been a pro Bass player and guitar player for 34 of those years. I have been playing a 1976 Alembic Series 1 serial # 287 Bass that I bought new, (I know you know a bit about them) for 28 years, so I think I know TONE when I hear it. My Les paul and all 6 of my Strats come alive with your speaker, could not be happier. I'll be needing more, keep up the GREAT work and Thank you VERY much.

Eric Lindstrom/Spokane, WA

Hi Guys at Tone -Tubby. I have been so happy with the AlnicoTT 12 Hempcone speaker that I have just sent you an order for a pair of Alnico TT 10s for my MusicMan 210RD100. Everyone who plays thru my MM 112RD50 with the TT12 loves the sound. Kindest regards....

Ivan/New Zealand

Tone Tubby,
Just thought I'd send along a little note to tell you folks about my experience with a 12" Alnico TT with the H1EDD hempcone. I've seen plenty of responses from folks talking about using the TT in a Deluxe, but didn't see much else concerning other Fender applications. A few weeks back I picked up a 1x12 cab for my '64 6G6-B Bassman head. Mounted the TT in there and for the past two weeks I've been absolutely floored by the beautiful sound coming from that speaker! I wasn't sure how one 12" speaker would handle the output from a 50W Bassman head, but I should not have worried. It handles cleans and crunch with equal ease, producing huge bottom end, trademark Fender highs, and those oh-so-cliched bell-like tones. Put the Normal Channel volume to 7 and it's utterly ridiculous the symphony coming from the Tubby. I'm a convert. Thing is, I should be pissed at you guys because my now other speakers sound dead, and I'm going to have to replace them all with Tone Tubbies. But so be it. It'll be worth it. If it doesn't have a Tone Tubby I'm playing acoustic!
Keep doing what you're doing.

Mike/Pittsburgh, PA

I've played guitar for years and even coming from a drummer who does know tone, my Showmwn with the Tone Tubbies in my studio, is a killer rig! Thanks!

Bill Gibson/Huey Lewis and the News

When UPS rolled up today with the tubbys I got so excited, that I put a session on hold just to put them in my 57 tweed twin today. I turned on the amp ,took a deep breath and played. You guys are SICK! SICK ! SICK ! These speakers are from another planet!!! There greaaaaaat!
Going to order the 10's for my super as soon as I get a chance, and let me know when the 15 is ready to put in my vibroverb! Thanks again,

BB Chung King/LA, CA

Hi there you guys at A BROWN SOUND!
Your speakers are the best hands down! As you know i purchased 1-h1e,a h1edd for one of my bogner 2/12 cabs and the other i left just stock with celestion v30s and the hempcones eat it up! The difference is like night and day, this is like preaching to the choir but the low end was so much fuller and the high end was so much smoother it was unbelievable.Their like playing through butter.these speakers should be ILLEGAL! HA HA! Needless to say the v30 cab sits with no play! also i just received my divided by 13 Ftr37 and cab with 2-h1s and it is aw some to. you guys are the S...! even though they run a little on the pricey side, they blow away the alnico blues and anything else "boutique" or just anything else period ! I know before to long my other bogner cab will have hempcones also. also i purchased a ceramic hempcone and put it in a cab next to a v30 and ran tone circles around the v30 also! keep it up guys and have a good one!
THANX,

Courtney/Illinois

Dear gentlemen,
I don't know how to thank you enough. Your hempcone speakers have finally drawn a close to an extremely frustrating and expensive 12 year tone oddessy. The inherent flaws in traditional speaker design had driven me mad for years, with no end in sight. Finally, a speaker comes along that doesn't know what compromise is!! The astonishing thing is that your speakers improve the tone of even the all-time classics, like plexis, tweed- era bassmans, matchless, vox, or just about anything else you could imagine! I'll never have to wonder again if I'm REALLY getting all the sound out of my amps! I am intrigued how the lows are round, powerful, and punchy, YET the mids are transparent and high frequencies sound clear and natural. Even more how immediate the response is, and still sound so creamy and well, brown!! I am a "tubby" for life! Thanks also go to Mark Akin in Texas who first told me about your products and even went out of his way to demo them for my incredulous ears! Thanks again and BTW, your cabinets are easily the best I've ever heard. BRAVISSIMO!
Sincerely,

Paul Wilkinson/Texas

I am finally, after a couple years of appreciation, able to say that I am now a proud owner of 2 beautiful 12" AlNiCo Hempcone TT's. The amp I'm playing through is a Siegmund Midnight Bluesbreaker Octal Custom that's mostly intended for cleans. The combination of the amp, cabinet and speakers along with my guitar really created a juicy and thick clean tone that lacks nothing but thinness. In overdriven mode with a Siegmund Missing Link tube boost pedal, the harmonic response out of the amp and speakers is just as rich as in the clean mode. No frequencies lost
amidst muddy distortion... Everything is clear and precise as one might dream.
Thanks again!

Mike Cornett/California

I bought a THD Univalve because I thought maybe this will give me what I am looking for. It did. And then I saw your speakers and thought I would give them a try. I am so glad I did. I have been playing this thing since it arrived yesterday afternoon. All I can say is I am glad the Univalve has a Hot Plate - I would probably be deaf by now.
Thanks for the speaker. I am having a great time!

Sweet, full tones from funky hemp cones

Vintage Guitar Magazine November 2003

We recently glommed a semi-openback Tone Tubby 4x12" speaker cabinet with four TT12 Alnico 12" speakers with (of course) hempcone drivers. Aesthetically, the Tone Tubby looks much like most extension cabinets, measures a sporty 26"x26"x12" with a straight baffle and 7"x14" opening in the back, and is covered in black tolex, with black grillcloth, metal corners, and large, recessed bar handles. Tone Tubby will dress up any of it's cabs in red, green, brown, or blonde tolex and dress it up with gold, silver, oxblood, or wheat grillcloth. The 2x12 is available in either vertical or horizontal arrangement. And if your inclined, they'll make your cab (regardless of variety) look very Vox-like! How'd it Soun? We checked out the cab using a 100 watt Reeves head, all-tube Peavey, and a Marshall. Our test guitars were a Fender '62 reissue Strat and a Gibson Les Paul Classic. We kicked things off with the Peavey, and at our customary settings we noticed a drop-off in the upper end of the frequency response compared to what we typically run it through. But with a slight bump in the highs, we were able to get more of the tone we knew so well.
Thus was revealed one aspect of the Tone Tubby cab; in general its tone is a little darker than you might be accustomed to, smoothing the peaks and valleys in the frequency response that you find with with most closed 4x12s, while maintaining the solid, thumpy low end that made the configuration famous. And it proffered the midrange airiness that appeals to fans of the open back cab. In the "gravy" department, despite being pushed hard, these little hemp monsters didn't go into that beyond-the-limits farting out that tends to plague low-watt alnico speakers. Overall, our run with the Tone Tubby was very pleasing. Whether we plugged in the Strat or Les Paul and power courtesy of Peavey, Marshall, or Reeves, it highlighted the inherent tone of our guitars and amps. John Harrison's hemp cones may indeed be a daydream come true.

Product Name: Tone Tubby
Description: Guitar Amp Speaker

What do guitar tone gods Eric Clapton, Carlos Santana, Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top and Sonny Landreth all have in common? They've all replaced their guitar amps' speakers with Tone Tubbies from A Brown Soun. We gave one a whirl to see what all the fuss is about... Our test setup was a '72 Fender Telecaster through a small practice amp in clean rhythm, overdriven rhythm, and lead settings, comparing three speakers: the amp's stock speaker, a Hempcone Tone Tubby, and an original 1960's Vox AC30 speaker that we had available. In all cases, the Tone Tubby shone--especially when compared to the stock amp speaker. Our listening crew used words like "bright, harsh, biting, irritating and gritty" to describe that speaker, while for the Tone Tubby, they used words like "beefy, warm, smooth, pleasant and musical." Interestingly, although the old Vox speaker had all the warmth and low end of the Tone Tubby, it was comparatively quite "muffled" and lacked definition across the frequency spectrum. The Tone Tubby was clearly the hands-down winner. Quite frankly, I was surprised that a speaker, with all other things being equal, could make such a dramatic improvement in the sound of a guitar amp. Clapton might still be god to some, but Tone Tubby now rules the amp speaker universe! For more info: www.tonetubby.com.

Excerpt from Guitar Player Magazine January 2003

GP: And you're also using a bigger cabinet.

Carlos: Yes, a 4x12. We found this gentleman who makes speakers with hemp cones (these are Tone Tubby alnico speakers made by A Brown Soun in San Rafael, California). When I told this to Dumble, he cracked up.
Oh I know who that is.

... now because I use four 12s with the Dumble head, I get the Pavarotti and Placido Domingo belly tones.

The combination of the Dumble amp, the hemp speakers, and this new mic means I don't have to look for tone anymore, says Santana. You just plug in and go mamma mia-even if your not Italian.

Excerpt from The Tone Quest Report Interview
October 2002

TQR: Tell us about your fascination with the old tweed Fender Dual Professionals.
Yes... by the way - the Hemp Tone Tubby speakers were sent over to the studio last week. We had a couple of Dual Showman cabs, and you know that amp went through an evolutionary renaissance, but fortunately, we had a couple of the old, smaller 2x12 cabinets with the maroon grill cloth. Now, I didn't realize that they make a "darker" and a "brighter" Hemp Tone Tubby, so we did a little experiment and loaded one cabinet with the two darker ones side by side and the other cabinet with the two brighter ones. Then we tried another cabinet with one of each in the same cabinet. Each one of them has merits, and they're all different, but we concluded that no matter how you stack it, that is one fine, fine piece of product. They look great, but most importantly, they sound great. They are really stunning, and they stand tall with anything - blue frame Jensens, 30 year old Celestion Greenbacks, the Vox Bulldog... you name it. All of the industry leaders are now standing beside another new individual, and it's really cool.
TQR: We couldn't agree more. It's not often that something truly new and cool comes along, just like those old Dual Professionals in their time...

Greetings...! The Tones are in service and performing beautifully. We have now installed all the stage cabinets with 'em and the iso-box set-up is runnin' 'em hard. Compliments on a fine speaker, amigo.

We are preparing to depart for an upcoming tour beginning in the USA April 25. Come on out. The California dates commence June 3rd. I'll attempt to forward a current schedule from the ZZ TOP website as the bookings continue. I look forward to checkin' in with you and your crewe...!

Kindest Regards,

Update: ZZ Top at Shoreline Amphitheatre June 8th, 2003

They do it for me!

Bob Weir/Grateful Dead

Good afternoon,
I've had my Tone Tubby 12" speaker for two months now and have received tons of compliments on my tone. I have a 64 Strat, PRS McCarty with S.D. antiquity pickups and a G&L ASAT Classic with a Lindy Fralin Vintage Bridge pickup. Amps include Mesa Single Rectifier, Mesa F-30 and the very first Fender Showman prototype with a 1-12" cabinet. All of my amps and guitars sound amazing with Tone Tubby.
In all styles of playing I am excited to say the Tone Tubby has brought shame to the original Celestion V-30 I pulled out of the Mesa Boogie products. (V-30's seam stiff and muddy) My leads are now silky and thick, my overdrive is fat and articulate without any harsh high end. Side by side with numerous other speakers, nothing compares. Thank you for developing such a beautiful and musical speaker!
I just love your speaker and will be purchasing more in the future.

Respectfully,

Todd D. Sims/Rancho Cucamongo, CA.

John, Thanks for letting me check out these speakers - they sound great in the Dumble Cab! Fact is, I find them to work really well in both open and closed back cabinets. Great work on your part in coming up with such a cool speaker. Take care and lets keep in touch.

Sonny Landreth/Breaux Bridge, LA

Dear John, I've just sent off my comments regarding your Hemp Cone speaker to David Wilson at The ToneQuest Report. I am on the ToneQuest advisory board and am a professional player here in the Nashville, TN area. David sent me one of your speakers for evaluation and I have to tell you I think it's wonderful. I believe David will print my views in the upcoming issue. I have it in a Princeton Reverb and it's been in there for about a month or so now. I've actually used it on a couple of record dates recently. One for Delbert McClinton (Delbert just won a Grammy award for Best Contemporary Blues Album) and also for country singer Pam Tillis. I even used it for pedal steel guitar on one cut! Those albums should come out by the years end. I'd like to send you copies when I get them. Anyway, I do a lot of session work as well as touring stuff out of Nashville. David Wilson is a great person and I think his publication is the best thing out there for us musicians, gear heads and tone freaks. Totally top notch! I only have one problem with your speaker. I don't want to give it back! Can we work out some kind of deal? I'll pay! Thanks,

James Pennebaker/Nashville, TN

Hey John, I really like that cab, it sounds wonderful.

Jimmy Herring

All I can say for now is that both the H1E and ESPECIALLY the H1EDD completely blew me away -- I first installed the H1EDD in a Dr.Z 1*12 cab and put my dead mint 66 Deluxe with tuned NOS tubes thru and I have never heard any vintage amp -- including one Keef I used to own -- that sounded anywhere this GOOD. I was so blown away I played a dozen guitars through it in one straight 4 hour sitting. I have heard quite a few mint and reconed Jensen '50s & '60s and JBL Ds with the best restored vintage amps and NOTHING had this kind of fidelity, tone, balance, and ambience.

Kudos,,

Paul/ Tokyo, Japan

Update July 21, 2003.
Hi Guys, Just had time to really play your 4x12 today. Many Thanks! Extremely SOLID construction, best of both worlds open-closed back baffle system design. By far the most tonally open + complex cab of any type I have ever played: sustain + true harmonics everywhere. This baby is louder than I expected! I'll let you know more later. Update Aug 13th. The 4x12 is incredible, so much louder and more complex than anything I've ever played (Marshall, Bogner, Hughes & Kettner etc). I really have to use ear plugs on this baby, really blew my ears a few weeks ago.

Well , i think i hate you guys & i know my wife does . these things are great . i have now played on 2 seperate stages with them & my boogie triaxis has never sounded so good . the bad news is that i also have a 2-10" boogie cab that i will have to try the 10"s in , an old boogie mark4 that i think the tubby will not only sound better in but also lighten the weight of the damn thing , & i am also thinking of trying one in my old polytone mini brute jazzbo amp . looks like i had better go out & try to get some better gigs to pay for these things .

Hello John, I installed my Tubby in the little Mesa combo right away. Big difference in punch, clarity and dynamics. Every note in each chord has its own voice. Congratulations on a very musical speaker. The clean channel goes from glassy to grind and the gain channel takes over where that leaves off. My Studio .22 is changed from a one trick pony to a usable amp with a wide range of sounds. The PRS sounds great and my amp has turned Strat friendly. I can tell from the clarity of the highs that it will cut through the band at lower volumes than before.
I will send you whatever business as I can. Mike Barclay needs your speakers.

Stoked in Sebastopol,

Norm Perry

As a long time player and seeker of "The Tone", I want to thank you for bringing this quality product to the market. I have no doubt that your speakers will be a sought-after upgrade for classic tube junkies and modern
amp builders alike. Everyone who has heard my 12 inch "Hempcone" just can't believe its sweet presence and dynamic range. It has made everything I play through it sound better! Can't wait to get a 10 inch for my
Princeton.
A Loyal Customer,

Peter Brooks/ Seattle, WA.

I just played my guitar for the first time in a really large church in Castro Valley. Afterwards I had the sound guy comming up to me and complimenting my big rich tone.... he loved it. They don't know about your the why's .... but they loved the sound. I was playing through a Fender Deluxe 66 Blackface and an original Paul Reed Smith Santana 1. Anyway I thought you'ld like to know even folks who aren't experienced with gear think your stuff sounds great..... it does!!!

Keven Ledbetter/Northern California

Hi guys. My Tone Tubby speaker arrived today and went into my MusicMan 112RD combo. Straight away it sounds great. The Celestion V30 I had in it previously was a good match in this amp and sounded great but the TT
is definitely tighter in the bottom end and also sweeter in the top end. As it breaks in with some use I am sure it will sound even better. I have several speaker brands, JBL, Celestion, Weber and a few others and I am immediately impressed with the TT tone. Nice work, now I will wait for your 15 incher for my PedalSteel..

Ivan Posa/ New Zealand

Hi There,

I originally planed to replace the ceramic speaker in my small Fender Custom Shop Woody Junior Ash Amplifier by the 12' alnico hemp Tubby. Unfortunately the motor is more pro eminent then the original Fenderceramic speaker so I could not replace the amp section back to the correct position. I decided to replace the 90 W Celestion of my Mesa Boogie Mark IV combo. Once the Tubby in place, the sound was so much better without any break-in time that I was immediately impressed. The alnico speaker is more open, fruity and pleasant at any volume. Without
overdriving any amp or preamp sections, the clear sound has some exciting harmonics that my amp never shown before. When delivering a saturated sound, the overdrive is velvety and pleasant, never aggressive to the ear. I changed it back again to the original speaker to be sure I was not dreaming but no: The original ceramic speaker sounded cold, narrow in spectrum without any personality, boring.

Best Regards,

Pierre Cordin/ Columbia, MD.

Received the speaker today. Been playing and comparing for a few hours, and it sounds great, very correct and inspiring. Make's you wanna play longer, and forget about time.
Thanks alot!.

Alf / Norway

I got my Tone Tubbies today! I installed my tone tubbies today! And I LOVED my Tone Tubbies today!
All I can say is:

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks,

Bud Wood / The Woodlands, TX

Hello John, Sean with The Codetalkers w/ Col. Bruce here, just wanted to say thanks for the hospitality you showed us when we were out in Cali last month. Bruce's Tone Tubbys are a joy to listen to night after night. His 'vahmet' tone never sounded so sweet. Look forward to trying the bass speakers when I get a chance. Congratulations and good luck

Sean Peterson / USA

Gentlemen,
We tried the two new Hemps I just purchased and they were the winner of our shootout - hands down! The bottom was bigger and tighter, and the mids were full and not mushy, and most importantly, they were not shrill on the high end. A real winner. Count us in.

Frank C. Matunas / The Vintage Amp Shop/Union, NJ

I wanted to let you know that I'm very very pleased with my cabinet. It's a perfect match for my Two Rock Topaz head. Usually I have to use some reverb but I played all night without it and the resonance from the speakers was terrific. The response and tone are unbelievable.

Thanks again,

Michael /RedCrowStudios

Just wanted to let you know how great the 2x12 cab with hemps sound with my 100W Dumble Overdrive Special. Like everyone else, I became interested in your speakers after the ToneQuest article. I became especially interested after checking out Steve Kimock's site and hearing him say that the Tubbies and cab were an exceptional match for his Dumble rig. The speakers are not even broken in yet and the cab is everything I wanted to match up with this amp. By the way, the break in is very dramatic with the hemps - after a few hours the bottom and high end really open up. I only have about 4-5 playing time on them and they keep getting better. For years I was wanting something that was less strident to use with my Dumbles. The EV was always the best compromise because even though it was very "in your face" and somewhat sterile sounding, at least it could handle the increased bandwidth and dynamics of the amp. Plus, the rumor has always been that Dumble tunes the amps for EV speakers. I don't know how to describe the sound of the Brown cab with the amp other than to say it sounds more organic and tuned for guitar, as opposed to a "PA" type of sound. It feels good to play; almost like a chewy type of feel without losing any dynamics or sounding overly compressed. The bottom is extended but still tight and the upper harmonics are very sweet. The speakers can easily handle the amp turned up LOUD in the 100W setting with no cone cry or harsh "tizzy"sounding speaker breakup. Later this week I am going to try the cab with my Trainwreck Express and Liverpool amps. I will let you know what happens.

Kimo Leong /Coconut Grove Music/Kailua, HI

I thought I should take a moment to write and let you know just how pleased I am with my hempcome TT. I had a Fender 65 Deluxe Reissue that I knew had potential, but it sounded so boxy and shrill with original ceramic speaker. I had tried a jensen P-12R as a replacement and got very discouraged, it got even thinner sounding and the highs were unpalatable. I had resigned myself to the conclusion that this amp was destined to sound thin. I came across your ad in Vintage Guitar and thought maybe its worth investigating. My wife purchased my TT for a birthday gift and I have to say it is one of the best presents I have ever received. This thing is the BALLS! No more thin shrill high-end and boxy lows, just pure TONE! I would without a doubt recommend these speakers to anyone looking for a sonic upgrade, I now love my reissue Deluxe. I cant say enough positive things about your product 100% quality and 100% fat flavorful tones. Thanks again!!!

John A. Johnson/Westbrook, MN

Howdy boys,

My cabinet arrived right on time yesterday. My wife and I were impressed with the care you took in protecting it from any shipping damage. As for the cabinet, the workmanship is of the highest order, the ToneQuest article that inspired my purchase was right on the money about that. It looks great, very distinctive in an understated classy way. And the sound, oh the sound! Clear, smooth, well articulated and defined, and with a rock solid bottom end, more than I expected from a single 12". Yeah, I like it a lot. This is without a doubt the best guitar speaker/cabinet of this size that I have ever heard. It was well worth the wait. Please extend my compliments and appreciation to everyone who had a hand in producing this little gem. Gee, I wonder how my rig would sound with a 2x12?
Gotta start saving...
I am one happy guitarist and a proud Tone Tubby owner.

Sincerely,

John Kearney/Ijamsville, MD

John I have been playing the Celestion Blues you overhauled for me with the Hemp cones for a couple of weeks now. I can tell you that after having vintage and modern Celestions, Fanes, Jensens, etc. (I have been playing for 31 years), these are THE BEST sounding speakers I have come across. I play thru a '73 Marshall Super Tremolo that has been converted to use KT66's and re-capped and re-filtered to JTM 45 100 specs. I WAS playing thru a '70 Marshall 4x12 with original Celestion 25 watt Greenbacks. The key word here is 'was'. Ever since I put the speakers you reworked back in their Marshall 4x12, they are the only speakers I use. (I played every amp I own thru the speakers and every one sounded better that ever) I have a '67 Traynor bottom with '67 20 watt Celestions that was/is my favorite speaker cabinet?.. But I do not like to push it hard or gig with it? I have had it since Highschool and to me it is irreplaceable?.. If I was to blow a cone it would really upset me. Your modded speakers sound nearly the same as those 20 watters? a bit tighter in the bottom end (A very Good thing!!)? and I know they can take a bit more punishment. Your speakers have so much upper end harmonics that I have been able to reduce the gain I play with, get better tone, and NOT have my ears hammered by the harsh top end Celestions have. Even though the hemp cones have Waaaaaay more upper end detail, they are very smooth and mellow. I love these speakers. Kind of a long winded way of saying Thank you?. But I wanted you to know just how pleased I am. There is one problem? I have all these other speakers that now sound so boring. Thank You.

Matthias A. Jans, Jr./Palatine, IL

Note: This report is about Celestion Blues that we reconed as Tone Tubbies.

I recently received one of your 12" speakers and installed it in a single twelve cab with a fender concert head. First of all I had tried every speaker imaginable in that combination and never liked any of them especially the Jensen alnico's because to me they sounded very harsh on the top end. So I was skeptical of your alnico speakers.
To my amazement when I first heard this speaker I couldn't believe the soft smoothness of the top end and started turning up the volume to see if they would get brittle as I got louder. Well, just the opposite happened. As I turned up the volume the sound became silkier and warmer. May I add that the low end is punchy and tight just the way I like to hear it. I plan to install your speakers in all of my amps, especially because I play all types of music for which I would need a great clean sound which they give me to a nasty dirty grind which they are incredible for.

You guy's have made magic!
A sound I've heard in my head for years and couldn't find it till now. Thanks

Tony Galla/LA,CA

Hello John & company, rarely does a product deliver what it promises, but in the case of the Tone Tubby such is not the case! I find your product to exceed expectations! After 30+ years of playing guitar, I'm not easily impressed. Tone Tubby takes me there. Keep it up!

Dan Quinnan/Grass Valley, CA

I just received a tone tubby yesterday and installed it into my 1980 mesa boogie mkII which came with an EV. I have been playing a Bogner Shiva combo for the last 2 years and could not stand the sound of the boogie so buying your speaker was a last ditch effort before selling the hardwood collectors item. Much to my surprise, the tubby makes this amp sound great - very warm and no more beaming highs and the speaker has yet to be broken in. Thanks again for a truly great product.

Rudi Kohnke/Elk Grove, IL

To David Wilson at ToneQuest
David, two more things, in your last issue before the two rock article, you ended it by saying dont buy another amp until you read about two rock amps. As much as i like this amp and agree with what you said, i would have to add whole heartedly, "Dont buy another amp till you get a Tone Tuby cab in hemp! I say this with my own tonehunt in mind and how it would have and is changed completly by these speakers! This rig is great with everything from my es175 to 335 to a parker to the stratt i got from you. Just a thought!

Rick Castleberry/Lilburn, GA

Hey John,
This is Mike Pogo from Burlington, VT. I'm sorry, I never came to thank you for the wonderful tone tubby speakers you sent me back in December. they are completely marvelous! my temp band Japanese Razor did a few shows around New Jersey in January, so it was a true test of power to rev up some of those Mahavishnu tunes to the fullest. They were a blast...
Well thanx again for the speakers and info, if I'm ever out there any time soon I'll be sure to stop by and would love to meet ya, peace -

M. Pogo/Burlington, VT

I received my Hempcone speakers yesterday and installed them in my Budda Superdrive 80 2x12 Combo. Yours are replacements for the Eminence speakers that come stock. I was not satisfied with the sound and they had a lot of annoying cone howl.
Anyway, I wanted you guys to know that yours sound incredible. I have never heard a speaker that is this smooth in response. From very clean to all out(Duane Allman live at the Fillmore) tone to the wall sound, these speakers do it all without even a trace of cone cry. I am amazed at how my Budda sounds. These thing act as if they are alive. Very responsive with an increase in sustain and harmonic content that I was not getting earlier.

Thanks for making a remarkable product.

Jim Hough/Arvada, CO

Just wanted to let you know that my hemp cone tone tubbie arrived in good shape. I put it in an open back Mesa Boogie cab and hooked it up to my Fuchs ODS. Holy shit! This thing sounds great. I just love it. Every other speaker I tried with that amp sounded harsh in the high end except yours.

Dan Cunningham/Montgomery, AL

I have an Orange cabinet with 2 hemp tone tubbies in it. Before I had just one tubby and a V30 and it sounded great, unhooked the vintage 30 and it sounded better, took the V30 out and the increased air flow made it sound even better, so purchased another tubby and it did not sound as good , made a new back out of a piece of birch plywood and cut a whole in it and now I have my best tone ever. I am convinced that this is one of the best purchases in guitar gear that I have ever made. Thanks a bunch.

William McPeak/Newnan, GA

Just wanted to drop you a line to let you know that the Tone Tubby arrived safe and sound a couple weeks ago. I've been using it in a 20W Class A Vox type amp (TopHat Club Royale) and it sounds great!!!.

Peter Williams/Harleysville, PA

I just popped the Tubby into my Deluxe Reverb RI and it sounds great! It hasn't even had a chance to break in yet. It's just gonna get better and better. A drummer buddy of mine was over while I was testing it and he said out of the blue 'Wow that's some great vintage Fender tone you've got there'. I'm real happy with it.
When I can afford a 2x12 cabinet I'll give you a buzz. I want to try it with a THD Univalve and a little Victoria Champ. Thanks,

Greg Wilder/Red Bluff, CA

I just got back from my first rehearsal using the TT-loaded Twin and thought you should be the first to know: these Tubbies really cut through the mix! There's much more midrange body, (which is probably a good thing with the
Strat) and I now understand why you said the bass would be better. Not so much deeper, but a much clearer, more focused-type of sound which adds some nice detail which had been missing with the Jensen's! I'm very glad I got the new H-1E. I'm still drawn to the addtitional high-end detail. Maybe two H-1E's would have been better, but maybe it's the H-1 "Bomb" combination, that I appreciated with the band tonight?

Another Tone Tubby Lover,

Gregg March/Lake Villa, IL

Hi, I just wanted to let you know I received the 12" TT speaker I ordered a few weeks ago and put it in my Deluxe Reverb amp. It sounds great! This amp has never sounded so good. Thanks.

I received my Tone Tubby 2 days ago and installed it in my SF Princeton Reverb. I'm tempted to write things like "cosmic tone truth", "tubby chubby", "alnico grail", ect. to try to describe the immediate satisfaction I'm getting from working with this speaker. When I heard you guys were using your 25+ years of experience to really "nail" this one special speaker of your own I thought, ...this could be killer...and it is. I have been playing professionally for many years and have had lots of stuff. This somewhat rare occurrence when something really delivers like this is a wonderful thing.Thank You.

Ray B/Boston, Mass.

The new Brown 2-12 pine cabinet with two Tone Tubby alnicos is the best sounding new speaker I've heard in a long time. It's incredibly accurate (you'll think about replacing pre-amp tubes because you can hear the difference). It has a wide and even tonal response in all registers, and it projects a clean, bell-like tube sound as well as a grittier overdriven signal with equal finesse.
I tried the cabinet with several vintage fender heads before deciding on the best set up for my sound. I also compared it to some vintage jensens. As you'd expect, it has a deeper, fatter sound (on the bottom) than a 4-p10r set-up. It also has brighter upper-mids, which is not surprising as it's new, not a 40-year-old magnet with recones. Curiously, I found the 2-12 was the perfect compliment to a 4-10 set-up, expanding the overall richness and drama of the amp set up. I also found that the 2-12 is able to generate feedback at a very low volume - by using the right amount of fingerboard vibrato and sitting in front of the speaker - which is a great trick. It means you you don't have to kill your bandmates or audience to get into that zone of cool tone.

"Their Sick!." Mark Karan/The Other Ones (Grateful Dead), Ratdog

"They’re sort of like an upgraded version of the old 15 Watt Vox Celestion Blue Speaker, sort of a cross breed between those and the old beautiful Jenson’s that Fender used to use back in the Tweed days, P12Ns I believe they’re called. I’m a tone freak, but I don’t go quite as far into it as Steve does." [laughs]

This balanced sounding speaker has a character of it's own that enhances, rather than gets in the way, of your sound...great mid-range punch with tight, solid bass and a smooth, refined top end. Thanks to Brown Soun, I got a great sounding, great looking cab that fits in the front seat of my 'Vette!

Rob Gillette/The Fabulous Jammies, San Jose

I just wanted to tell you that the Tone Tubby's are working out great. I am running stereo with 1 1x12 on each side of the stage and and it is butter-licious. The very first gig that I used them, someone came up to me who had never seen us before and told me that my tone was "hypnotic!" She said that she had never heard a guitar sound like that before. I took that as a huge compliment and you should too. As I continue to become familiar with their sound, I keep finding subtle adjustments that make the tone absolutely sing. I play slide mostly, so the effect is even greater. When I got my custom acoustic guitar, I felt like it made me a better player. I feel the same way about your speakers, like they bring me to another level.

Brandon Creasman/The Electric Magi, Detroit

I wanted to let you know that I really like your 12" speaker - I put it in my '67 Deluxe Reverb and took it to the Sonoma County Blues Society Blues jams. At these Jams I typically play along with 60 and 100 watt Mesas and Fender Supers and Twins etc. (and a lot of really loud amps) but I have no trouble cutting through. I love that set up with either my '55 Les Paul copy with P-90's or my Tele'...just wanted to let you know.

12" Ceramic Tone Tubby 40/40 Field Reports

Just a quick note to let you know I ran a quick test of the 12" ceramic drivers you sent me against a pair of vintage Celestion G12-30 speakers I've been using to test and develop with. The Tone Tubbys are: louder, cleaner and have a tighter bottom end and a clear bell-like high end. Even though I got more chest thumping volume out of them, the spike in the ear I normally get from the G12-30s was absent. Your speakers let the amp breathe better. I noticed that break up was clearer (less ragged) and when I cranked up the Swampdonkey M50 to the overdriven realms of AC/DC, the overdrive sound was a lot smoother. Bravo ! In the next week I'm expecting pairs of vintage Jensen ceramic and alnico drivers that I'll compare to the Tone Tubbys. I'll also test in a more suitable venue on the weekend and give you more feedback on my impressions. Overall, I'm very impressed and look forward to testing the Alnico product sometime in the future. We'll be in touch !!! All the best to you and your crew!
Chris/Swampdonkey Guitar Amplifiers

Just wanted to drop you a line and tell you how pleased I am with your product. I build custom hardwood amplifiers as a hobby and to satisfy my own urge for good tone. I recently loaded up a black walnut V-front cabinet of my design with your Ceramic 12s. They sound fantastic. They are driven by a 35 watt tube circuit that I built myself and the rig sounds as good as, or better, than my all original '64 Bassman. It has now become my amp of choice. Thank you for a wonderful product. I will be using them again for future amplifiers.

Jose Peraza/El Cajon, CA

I first played through Tone Tubby speakers when I borrowed a 4X12 Marshall speaker cabinet from a band that we played before at a gig. My first impression when I started playing was that these were not Celestion speakers I was playing through. I mean, I was hearing a creamier fatter tone that I was not use to being that I also was a 4X12 Marshall owner as well. So when the show was over I asked the guitar player who loaned me the TT, what he had loaded in the cab and he proceeded to tell me that there was a company named Tone Tubby that made speakers out of  hemp & ceramic or alnico, hence the great sound that I got.  So I went online and ordered myself a well deserved 4X12 TT cab with ceramic speakers and took it into the studio for recording which you can hear at my bands site www.myspace.com/Castillo or my solo artist site www.myspace.com/joseluisperaza. I can tell you ever since then I've been getting compliments on my tone. Thanks Tone Tubby!

Got the cab. It is amazing. It magically makes every other piece of gear sound better. It makes my wah pedal in the fully toe down position sound sweet, not harsh and bright like it used to....but at the same time I play a strat through it and the tones are clean, snappy and with the right amount of brightness. Hit it with gain and it gets real creamy. The best way I can say it is this: the tone tubby cab and speakers filter out all the non-musical frequencies, leaving only the stuff guitar players want to hear.

Lou Vena/Roselle, IL

Hello tone tubby Staff,

My name is Joel Sanders, I am a local musician in the Atlantic City area of New Jersey. I recently purchased a crate v series amp, equipped with one of your speakers, to use as a back-up amp for my ac30 vox. Sorely after the purchase of my new v series crate I found myself favoring the tone tubby loaded crate to my vox. The response of the speaker is great at any volume and the tone is comparable to that of the numerous vintage speakers I have heard out there. Excellent product guys!

Keep Rockin'

Joel Sanders/Atlantic City

I just wanted to send you a picture found on the internet that I thought you guys might enjoy.

It's a real classic shot. As soon as I saw it, I knew you guys had to  take a gander. I look forward to loading up the Super Boys for our  bass player. I have a Marshall 4x12 with Ceramics and a TT 2x12 with  original hempcones. I'm going to get a 4x12 with original hempcone  alnicos real soon... They're all amazing, and I can't get enough!!  Your speakers are like sonic nicotine!!

Thank You!

I had over several years switched around a variety of Celestions and Webers in my custom 20-watt Plexi clone - alnicos and ceramics - seeking the ever elusive holy grail of tone. Great tone came from all of these speakers, yet each possessed certain weaknesses. I found myself wishing that there was one speaker somewhere out there that took the best qualities from the speakers I tried and eliminated the weak spots. I then tried a Tone Tubby Ceramic that I ordered from South Valley Vintage Amps and put it in the little Plex. I realized instantly that there the fictitious speaker I envisioned is not fiction afterall. The TT provided all the punch and attitude that a Pexi-type amp craves, and unlike any ceramic I had played before, it had some of the smooth sophistication of an alnico speaker. The icepick in the ear effect was gone. I took the little Plex into a local guitar shop and started playing it to show the owner. All of a sudden, several people came from other areas of the store, wanting to see what amp the music was coming from. I should mention that this amp is a combo, constructed from pine and birch. It has a retro look, and is not exactly a masterpiece of carpentry. That said, all who chuckle at this amp's visual funkieness quickly zip up their pie-holes when they hear it speak. The Tone Tubby Ceramic 12 is the last speaker this amp will ever have.

Thank You!

I recently purchased a new Crate VFX5212 guitar amp. It has Brown Soun Tone Tubby speakers. These speakers blow away any Celestions I have ever owned or tried to date. They sound incredible in the Crate VFX5212. I guess sound is subjective but I am comparing other amps I have owned, Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier with a Marshall 1936 Cab, Marshall DSL100 - 1960A  4x12, Fender hot Rod Deville, Peavey classic 50. Thanks.

Killer Tone Tubby's The Dude talked about.

[quote=Babe Magnet]-Interesting amp there under the Mesa. What is it?

I don't know..
I just hear the guys talking about how great the Tone Tubby's are that I took a shot of one.
Maybe Dave or John could fill you in on them.

The keyboardist, John Langford, was good tooo...He was off & on stage as needed,..& you could see him rockin' in the wings a bit tooo... good vibe, fun guy, & he makes HEMP speakers!!!! & Dave likes 'em! ...& DAVE PLAYIN' HIS NEW GUITAR!!!!!! WOOOOHOOOOOoooooo!! Looks & sounds AWESOME!!

I received the Tone Tubby you sent me and it arrived safely. It's already installed in the Chicago Blues Box Kingston 30 and the sound is awesome. Your speakers really sound the best!
Thank you again. Best regards,

Daniele Cabibbe/Italy

After playing a Tone Tubby 1x12 for about 2 months. I can't say how much I love your speakers.  Thanks for the quick replacement, less than hour.  I really love the sound - what an improvement over the Celsetion I was playing through my Mesa DC 10 or Fender Bandmaster.  I hope to be bringing in more cabinets for Tone Tubby installations soon.

Hey Guys,

I just got off the phone with Boogie and told them to break their piggy bank open and buy a few TT’s to put in their amps to check them out. I have owned over a dozen high end amps in the past years. From Boogies to Vintage blackfaces, and a lot in between. A few weeks ago, I bought the greatest new amp Boogie has come out with in years. The Lone Star Special. I thought this was the greatest amp in the world. I was wrong. I just put in a ceramic 12 hempcone into the LSS today. NOW it’s the greatest amp in the world. Wow. I just can’t describe the beautiful sounds coming from this. All tones! All settings. Shimmering clears vintage breakup to metal mania. It’s all there times ten. It’s like I had 10 pounds of wax removed from my ear canals, or that feeling of complete clarity when your ear pops from altitude changes.

I bow to your greatness and will build a shrine to honor you.

P.S. My family may come after you, since they can’t pry the guitar from my hands.

Most recently, I bumped into Ted K. from Ampeg/Crate, who came around with their newest introduction from the Crate series... our favorite being the new 50-watt tube-powered combo. This particular V-50 was selected out of the line with its 2x12 arrangement, and using John Harrison's Tone Tubby hemp speakers. We slapped a couple in those V-50's, and they really have a sweetness reminiscent of the early Marshall Bluesbreaker combos.

News Flash: 2005: Look for Tubbs in a Crate Amp near you. Available now!!

I just purchased a 2x12 cabinet from Crate with 2 of your ceramic 40/40 speakers in it. I know I’m preaching to the choir but WOW!!!! I actually believe that the speakers alone fixed the EQ nuances that I just couldn’t stand about my monitor mix. No need for EQ’ing here. As a matter of fact your speakers are as crucial to my sound now as having the proper amp to use. Your speakers absolutely blow away my Celestion Vintage 30’s AND my G12M Greenbacks.

A sold-out fan,

Paul/Denver, Colorado

Dear Tubbers,

You folks are the real deal. When rookie nammers Stone Tone needed a perfect amp to demo their precious babies. Tone Tubby coughed up a 30 watt beast (Crate V30 with a Tone Tubby Hempcone Ceramic 12") that stole the show in our booth. Thanks to your impeccable little amp we had flawless sound and beautiful tone. (what else would you expect with such a combo, granite guitars and hemp speakers??)
Anytime we can help you out with something just drop me a line.

Thanks again,

Bob Anderson/Stone Tone Music

Thanks for a great product. I've played through both the alnico and the ceramic 12" TT's and just enjoyed the hell out of every note. My ceramic Tone Tubby loaded 4-12 cab is so smooooooth with just the right amount of breakup and grind to give me singing blues solos with solid bottom end.

Thanks again,

Ed Drotar/California

Hi John,
Great talking with you today.
As I said we are now using Tone Tubby Ceramic speakers in all our 12" amp combos. The 4x10 model we make will soon be shipped with Tubby's as well. I'm thinking about combining 2x10 alnicos and 2x10 ceramics in that model.

Once I got your speaker sample I began optimizing (fine tuning) 2 of my amp models to accomodate your Hemp Cone design. The results are nothing less than amazing. I think some builders do it backwards, trying to find a speaker to fit thier amp, I believe that the amp needs to be tuned to compliment the speaker. I'll send you one to check out for yourself, you gonna love it!!

Thanks,

A letter to Dan Butler from one of his customers.

Hi Dan,

I'm the proud owner of your fabulous Kingston amplifier. This amp just sounds great for my music! Single coils or humbuckers no problem, they both sound excellent. I love the fact that you control your sound with just your volume knob. No stomp boxes needed! That Tone Tubby Hempcone is the best, no farting out! Also, it's the perfect size for the small clubs I play and it's a looker in purple. I just love the amp! You should hear it with my leslie!

Thanks,
Rick Masi

Hey John, Jahson here in Albuquerque.I just want to say,I love the sound of my new tone tubbies. And so does everybody else who hears them. I've been in the studio the past four nights and the engineer is totally impressed with the sound. I would like to send you a cd when it's done. Reggae music seems to just flow out of the ganja cone. And ganja cones seem to just flow in to I. It's ok to feel like you need to go to the van after reading this, put on some Bob Marley on and chill. It's a real honor that these speakers were handmade for me. To me that's really cool. I saw some pictures of you on your site, and you look a lot like my grandpa. He's from Whittier Ca. and retired here in Alb. This city has grown tremendously sense you were a kid. The only thing you would recognize would be the Sandias. One Love, from New Mexico .

John and Charlie,
My cabinet sounds so great with my Tone Tubbies! I can't thank you enough. It's truly the best tone I've ever had. Thought I'd send this picture of my rig. We just played under the Arch in St Louis on July 4th (03). We had a crowd of 50,000 or so and Tone Tubbies rocked! I'll stop by when we play the Bay Area later this month and I'll call soon.
Love always,
Bernie

Update September 2004
What's up guys? I've been on the road since June with Michael with the Rock and Soul Review which includes Average White Band and Hall and Oates. It's been great and the Tone Tubbies are kicking serious butt as usual. I get so many coments on my tone.
I just wanted to check in with you and say hi and thanks again for making my rig sound so good. We play Concord in Oct. Please let me know if you'd like to come. Love always, Bernie Chiaravalle

Update July 2005
Hey John,
I'm out on the east coast at the start of a summer tour with Michael McDonald. I've got my 4x12 loaded with my TTubbies for the whole summer and fall. We've had to use rental stuff for the last few months on gigs so I've been without my own rig. But man, as soon as I fired up the rig yesterday the tone was back! I can't tell you again how much I love these speakers!
Anyway, we're hitting the Bay Area late July/early August. I hope to stop in and say hello. Let me know if you need any tickets. love always, Bernie

I'm telling everyone about them. Their great speakers!

I love the speakers that you sent me, the tone is really warm and sweet and does give the orange cab some solid definition. Thank you so much for hooking me up.

Hey just wanted to let you know that I finally got this thing in my Blues
Junior and it sounds great. Im addicted.

.Mark K / Sedona, AZ

I just wanted to drop you a line letting you all at TT know what a amazing product you make. Dave
came down and put in 4 ceramic Hempcone 12" in my Orange cab about a year ago and they are truly my secret weapon. I am trying to help them to be less secret. Anyway I will be at the Zinky booth at NAMM this year and will come by to say Hi..

.Ron Heathman / Supersuckers

Charlie, Just wanted to thank you for your service and attention. The speakers are the BOMB!! They are exactly as you described. Muchas Gracias,

Test results on Tone Tubby Speakers.

12" Ceramic, good general sound, the tone falls some where between the Vintage 30 and the green back. I would prefer to use this speaker in place of the Vintage 30. I would also use them in place of the Green back if the power was much higher and the customer needed a little less bass.

Speak to you soon.

.Denis Cornell / DC Developments U.K.

Just want to let you know I installed the 12" Tubby in my Princeton Reverb and have used it for the last 2 weekends playing. The sound is just great. It makes the amp really come alive. Last night I accidentally used it for several songs with the bypass setting invoked on my Yamaha DG Stomp amp simulator/effects pedal. It sounded so good, I think I will use it without all the time. The tone is so warm and full, but with enough bite to cut through the mix when I want to solo. Sustain is just incredible.

All The Best,
Burt Tschache / Oregon

I installed your speaker in my 65 watt Peavey amp and following is my impression of the new sound. The first thing to keep in mind is the speaker can't create what's not in the electronics. The Peavey "Transtube Studio 112" was improved in the mid range area and it was a huge improvement in tone quality digging out more dynamic range from what the amp provides. Clarity is a big gain, the "Transtube" transistor amp offers a mild to medium tube distortion simulation but not until the speaker was installed was that feature distinguishable from speaker muddiness. The final improvement was the speaker draws more watts so at low volumes a player needs to turn up the amp and that puts your ready volume more into the sweet spot in the amp dynamics, using more amp watts at low volumes.
A tech guy can explain the above in tech talk but the final word to the world could be "A new amp for the price of a stomp box".

Thanks,
Bob McConnell / California

10" Alnico Tone Tubby Field Reports

I used John's speakers in conjunction with an old silvertone head, and got the coolest
most authentic early sixties garage band tone. I'm definitely a convert.
Pete Buck - REM

Great work Guys! I just bought a 10" alnico TT for my 1967 Princeton Reverb and had to drop you a line to say thanks for the greatest speaker! I guess it's just what the PR needed, because it sounds sooooooo good now i can't believe it... the 40 watt TT seems to have made the amp more powerful. This PR runs at 18 watts! it's a jem, but the ***** 25 watt ceramic speaker that i had in there just couldn't deal with the power of this little amp and sound sharp and papery .. But now with the Alnico TT in there it's simple sounds beautiful ... like a little deluxe Reverb . The 67 PR is an awesome amp and the TT deals so well with the wide range of tonal and sonic possibilities of a great old fender amp like that one and really makes that vintage sound come to life. Thanks to Charlie for hooking me up with my TT..... your right they do sound great right out of the box! So things are looking very up thanks to Tone Tubby. Gratefully

Sean Alquist /Los Angeles

Just put my 10" alnico in my Pignose G-40 tube amp; WOW!! I got tone all the way to the top note; it's truly awesome. Thanks guys!!

J.M. O'Neal/PA

Hey Charlie, thanks so much for the 2x10 cab. I have been  finding lots of use for it. The sound is different from a 1x12 or 2x12....  Kind of in between those two but with its own kind of extra dimension.  Anyway its great, thanks to you and John and all the good folks at Tone Tubby for your excellent products.

(TT New look for 07)

Kevin Ledbetter/California

I purchased a 2x10 cab that I use in smaller venues with a competitive speaker config inside and have gigged that way for several months... I just came across a good deal on 2 TT Alnico 10's and played my first gig with the updated 2x10 cab the other night. Once again I'm completely sold on the remarkable product that you offer. Anyone reading this and wondering if Tone Tubby's are worth it... think no more ! It will be the best investment you can make to bring life to your amp
and smiles to you face. Happy again,
Joey Love/Texas
www.joeylove.com

I put one alnico 10 TT in my Brownface Fender Concert. It's amazing how by changing just 1 out of 4 of the original Oxfords adds noticeably more smoothness and clarity with less mud and yet keep the amp sounding pretty much the same as it did before. It's a bit like recording your amp with cheapo mic into a portastudio and then upgrading to a recording in a pro studio. Whenever I record this amp I mic the TT exclusively and the results have been mind-blowing. Yet another advantage of the hemp cone..... an awesome speaker when mic'ed up!

To hear the results for yourself, feel free to listen to clips of The Lost Angels new album on which every guitar sound is a recording of a TT alnico 10. I hope you enjoy what you hear and appreciate what the TT can do.

Regards.

Rob Cooke/London www.thelostangels.net

The Tone Tubbies sound really sweet in the Black Face Super Reverb!!!! Two Ceramic's up top and two Alnico's down below. Very happy with the sound.

Thanks again,

Brian Davis/Rohnert Park, CA

Hey TT guys, I got my 2x10 da bomb cab yesterday. Played it at rehearsal last night and am very very happy, it sounds smooth and just great. If you need an endorser that is somewhat less famous than Clapton I'm all yours. Keep up the great work
Best,

Pat Smith/Santa Clara, CA

Hi ,
Just loaded the 4 (2 AlNiCo,2 ceramic)  Tone Tubby 10's that I ordered into my '65 Super Reverb. It sounds great! No suprise... I've been using a Tone Tubby 1x12" cab w/ Dr. Z Route 66 amp as my
gigging setup for over a year. Many thanks for great service, timely delivery and a fantastic product.

Best wishes,

Joe Gorfinkle/West Hollywood, CA

Hi Guys........got my Tubby Alnico 10's this morning and they are successfully installed in my Music Man 210-65 Amp........they sound incredible!! The amp I've had for almost 30 years has taken on an entirely new personality and will now enjoy "favorite amp status"! I talked to Charlie and a Tech this morning........thanks for speaking with me and answering my questions. Here's a Photo of them nestled in their new home.....thanks again. Sincerely,
Thanks.................

Tone Tubby 10" Review
October 2003

Since their introduction in 2001, the Tone Tubby Alnico hemp speakers have been enthusiastically embraced by Carlos Santana, Billy F. Gibbons, Kirk Hammet and Eric Clapton, among others. But John Harrison is a tinkerer, and despite the accolades he's received from so many of his rock idols, he has continued to experiment with the evolving art of speaker craft. His latest version of the Hemp Tone Tubby features a super lightweight, copper-clad aluminum voice coil that will permanently silence critics who have claimed that the hemp Tone Tubbies were too dark and lacking treble. We received some of the first 10" hemp Tone Tubbies with the new voice coil (initially developed for Eric Clapton in an effort to eliminate the subtle dropouts that can occur when extremely subtle, soft passages are played on a big stage with a band). The hemp cone Tone Tubby 10's are utterly magnificent, with an incredibly solid bottom, fat mids, and gloriously detailed, creamy highs. Uncork these bad boys and you'll hear rich, textured harmonic overtones that you've never heard before. We don't pretend to understand how hemp versus paper pulp can deliver such a radical step up in dynamic response and tone, but Harrison has taken the basic design of the Alnico Celetion G12 (call it 'blue' or 'bulldog' if you wish) and forged an instrument that can inexplicably handle 50 watts of your best whoop ass.
Quest forth...

Hi Guys,
Just a quick note to let you know, I installed a pair of Tone Tubby Alnico 10's in my Budda Twin Master. Last night was the first chance I had to really "open" her up. And the results were amazing. Every musician at the Jam commented on the killer tone I was getting. You guys have created a great speaker !!!
Thanks,

Rick/ Hawaii

I got the 10" Hempy and put it in my 3x10 Tweed Bandmaster. Instantly made a difference! Big , full and articulate sounding speaker! It's really great! It made the amp sound bigger and more toneful.
Thanks.................

A Brown Soun: The all-new Hemp E Cones, Bass 10’s, and 10’s for guitar are here! In addition to A Brown’s original hemp cones, John Harrison has created a new “E” cone that is a bit brighter than the original hemp cone. Killer tone for Fender amps, or in combination with the original Hemp Tone Tubby speaker. The bass 10’s have received rave reviews from none other than Tommy Shannon, and the 10’s for guitar will knock you out in your Princeton, Vibrolux, or Super. A Brown Soun was founded in San Rafael, California in 1974 by John Harrison – a working musician who refused to settle for the few reconing choices that existed when he first needed speakers repaired in the Bay Area. Since then, John has been recognized by artists such as Carlos Santana, Neil Young, Pearl Jam, Van Halen, and many others as California’s top speaker reconer. In addition to its famed reconing services, A Brown Soun also custom builds speakers and cabinets for virtually every application. The renowned Tone Tubby speaker developed by A Brown Soun has received rave reviews from top professionals around the world. Brown’s recently released series of speakers for guitar and bass featuring hemp cones is setting a new benchmark for guitar and bass speaker performance, with dramatically improved clarity, note definition, frequency response, durability, and power handling. Whether you need new speakers, custom built cabinets, or vintage speakers rebuilt and sounding right, A Brown Soun is your professional resource. As the Tone Tubby logo says, “We’re committed to tone,” and that means yours.

Last night I removed two blue bell, made in Italy, Jensen’s from my Fender Bassman RI. Put in two 10 inch Tone Tubby’s. Turned Amp on and played for the next 6 hours. I can’t stop. This is the most incredible “upgrade” I’ve ever made in my life! The old tweed now puts out this tone that just grabs you and stands the hair up on the back of your neck! Oh I look forward to growing old with my Tubby’s!

10" Ceramic Tone Tubby Field Reports

I put the speaker in my Vox VR30R – Wow! I was really impressed with what happened to the tone of the amplifier with my Ibanez twin-humbucker, slimline hollowbody (Artcore AFS75T). It turned out do just what I’d hoped for, but maybe didn’t expect. I had to rasp out the hole for the speaker on the mounting board by about 3/16” to get it to fit in—but that didn’t take more too long to accomplish and it sits snug as a bug in a r
